Let’s start with the question that brought you here: what does a website actually cost?
The real answer is anywhere from $0 to $50,000+ — which isn’t useful on its own. A small business website can genuinely cost anywhere in that range depending on what you actually need. What matters is what you get at each price point, what the hidden costs are, and how to figure out what’s actually worth spending for your stage of business.
This is the breakdown we wish someone had given us before we built our first website. No vague ranges, no upselling — just the honest picture for Australian small business owners in 2025.
Platforms like Squarespace, Wix, and the free tier of WordPress.com let you get a site live for very little upfront. You pick a template, add your content, and publish.
What you actually get: a website that functions, looks reasonable if you have a good eye, and costs very little in dollar terms.
What it usually lacks: a conversion-focused structure, professional copy, SEO foundations, and anything that distinguishes you from the thousands of other businesses using the same template.
The hidden cost: your time. Building a small business website from scratch — properly, with good copy and a sensible structure — takes most non-designers 40–80 hours. At your own hourly rate, that’s often $4,000–$8,000 in time. And the result still usually needs a rebuild within 12–18 months.
Annual platform costs: Squarespace business plan ~$468/year AUD, Wix business plan ~$430/year AUD. Plus domain ($25/year), email hosting ($120/year if you want a professional @yourdomain.com address), and any premium plugins or apps.
This is where you hire someone to take a premium template and adapt it to your brand — swapping colours, fonts, imagery, and basic content — without a full custom build. Common on freelancer platforms and with low-cost web design services.
What you get: a faster build than fully custom, at a lower cost than a bespoke project. The limitation is that you’re still working within the template’s structure, which may or may not suit how your business actually needs to present itself.
What to watch for: copywriting is almost never included. You’ll be expected to provide your own content, which for most small business owners is the hardest part of the project.
Our Website Starter Pack sits in this range. You can see exactly what’s included here: Website Starter Pack
This is the territory where a designer or small agency takes your brief and builds something that’s designed around your business — not applied to a template. It includes custom design, proper page structure, and often basic SEO setup (meta titles, descriptions, URL structure, Google Search Console configuration).
At the better end of this range, copywriting may be included or offered as an add-on. This is the range where you start to see real strategic thinking applied to your website — not just aesthetics.
For most Gold Coast service businesses in the $5K–$30K project value range, this is the right investment level. The website should pay for itself with a handful of new clients.
Our Website Growth Pack sits in this range: Website Growth Pack
Custom design from scratch, bespoke functionality, full copywriting, SEO strategy, professional photography integration, and often ongoing support. This is what an established business needs when the website is a central part of a growth strategy — not just a credibility piece.
At this level, you’re getting strategic input on the entire digital presence, not just a good-looking page. The businesses that invest at this level are typically the ones for whom a single new client justifies the spend.

Even the most transparent web design quote often misses some ongoing costs. Here’s what to account for:
For a self-hosted WordPress site, realistic ongoing costs are $150–$300/month AUD when you include hosting, maintenance, email, and a basic email marketing tool. For Squarespace, it’s closer to $100–$150/month.
Here’s the frame shift we always offer Gold Coast clients who are hesitating on the investment:
What is your average client worth? Not just the first project — the lifetime value including referrals and repeat work.
If your average client is worth $3,000, and a properly built website generates one additional client per month through Google search — clients who would have gone to a competitor without a better website — that’s $36,000/year. A $5,000 website investment pays for itself in 7 weeks.
Even if it generates one additional client per quarter, that’s $12,000/year from a $5,000 investment. That’s the real ROI math behind investing properly in a small business website. The numbers work.
The question isn’t “can I afford a website?” It’s “what is it costing me not to have one that works?”
Before committing to any web design project on the Gold Coast, ask these:
You should own them outright. If a designer is using a proprietary system that locks you in, know that upfront.
Most quotes don’t include it. Writing your own copy is the most common cause of a delayed, disappointing website project.
Some agencies charge for every small update; others include a support period. Know what you’re getting.
At minimum: page titles, meta descriptions, URL structure, Google Search Console setup, and a sitemap submission. If the answer is vague, ask for specifics.
Experience with local service businesses in your market is worth more than a beautiful portfolio of e-commerce sites.
Usually a combination of: offshore development, template-only work, no copywriting, no strategy, and faster (lower-quality) execution. You get what you pay for — but what matters is what you need, not the highest or lowest price.
Yes — but compare them on scope, not just price. A $3,000 quote with no copywriting is not comparable to a $5,000 quote that includes it. The $3,000 option will cost more once you add what’s missing.
Our packages start with the Website Starter Pack (see pricing and inclusions at the link below) and scale up depending on scope. We’re transparent about what’s included and what typically drives investment up. No surprises at invoice time.
